Obtaining a Portuguese Bank Account

Why do I need one? How do I get one?

Getting a Portuguese bank account is one of the most important milestones in your relocation journey, and it is something we will begin working on as soon as your NIF is issued!

Having a local account is actually a legal requirement for your residency application, and you will need to show a statement from this Portuguese account at your visa appointment to prove that your funds have already been successfully transferred to Portugal. Beyond the paperwork, it will simply make your life here much easier.

You will need it to set up direct debits for utilities, sign a lease agreement, and handle your daily purchases without worrying about constant currency conversion fees.

If you are planning to buy property, opening this account early is absolutely crucial. While you can sometimes use a foreign account to pay the initial downpayment (for the promissory contract), the final deed payment must legally come from a Portuguese bank account.

(Note: If you plan to get a Portuguese mortgage to buy your home, we usually recommend waiting to find the right mortgage deal first, and then opening your account directly with that specific bank. This saves you from having to do the process twice!)

How the process works:

To make things as smooth as possible, we have a partner that helps you open your bank account remotely. They have fantastic English-speaking staff and are highly experienced in helping expats set up their accounts remotely.

We will connect you with our dedicated contact, and you will need to provide a few standard documents: your newly acquired NIF, a valid ID, proof of your current address, and proof of your employment or income.

Once your account is open, you will need to fund it by transferring money from your home country. For this step, we always recommend using a professional currency exchange broker rather than a traditional bank transfer, as it is much more reliable and cost-effective. You can find more information about how to handle your currency exchange here.
