Paying for Rentals

In Portugal, rent is typically paid via direct bank transfer. Every Portuguese bank account has an IBAN (International Bank Account Number), which is a highly secure system that ensures funds are only deposited to the exact account holder. It is the standard, safest way to handle your monthly lease payments.

Setting up Utilities

Monthly utilities like water, electricity, and internet are almost always paid through automatic direct debit. This is exactly why having your local account set up early is so crucial! Real Estate Purchases

If you are buying a home, the payment is usually split into two main stages. For the initial downpayment (when you sign the Promissory Contract), you can transfer the funds directly from your international account or your Portuguese one, which allows for some flexibility in your timeline. However, on the day of the final deed, you will legally need a certified bank cheque drawn directly from your Portuguese bank account to cover the remaining balance.
