Obtaining a NIF

What is a NIF? Why is it important? How do I get one?

The NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is your Portuguese tax identification number. It is a unique 9-digit number required for anyone who needs to pay taxes or carry out official transactions in Portugal.

Getting your NIF is one of the very first steps in your relocation journey, and we handle this process for you as part of our packages!

Why do you need it?

While you can use your NIF for smaller daily transactions (which can offer future tax benefits), it is absolutely mandatory for major life steps in Portugal, such as:

  • Opening a Portuguese bank account
  • Signing a lease agreement or buying property
  • Setting up utilities (water, electricity, internet)
  • Enrolling minors in school and the public healthcare system (SNS)

How to obtain it?

The easiest way to get your NIF before arriving is through an online service provider. You will typically need to provide:

  • A scanned copy of your passport.
  • Proof of your current address abroad (like a recent bank statement).
  • A signed Power of Attorney (POA) form.

Once submitted, it usually takes about 1 to 2 weeks to be issued (though it may take slightly longer during holidays).

💡 Important Note on Fiscal Representation: As a non-EU resident applying remotely, you are required to have a Fiscal Representative in Portugal to obtain your NIF, which involves an annual fee. However, once you officially move to Portugal and update your NIF address to your new Portuguese residence, you can drop the fiscal representative and avoid future fees!
