The application for a residence permit is submitted by appointment (or through an electronic platform – currently being implemented for residence visa holders ) and is submitted in person with a form signed by the applicant or their legal representative. It can be submitted at any AIMA store, which may forward it, after processing and decision, to the services in the applicant's area of ​​residence. It must be accompanied by:

  • The granting of a residence permit requires: the absence of any fact that, if known to the competent authorities, would prevent the granting of the visa; Absence of conviction for a crime punishable in Portugal by a custodial sentence of more than one year; The applicant is not within the period of prohibition of entry and stay in national territory, following a removal order; Absence of indication in the SII UCFE for the purposes of refusing entry and stay or return, under articles 33 and 33-A of REPSAE.

  • Without prejudice to applicable special legal provisions (when the Foreigners Law specifically provides for different time limits), the temporary residence permit is valid for a period of two years from the date of issue of the respective title and is renewable for successive periods of three years.

  • The following offenses apply: Art. 192 of REPSAE (Illegal stay); Art. 197 of REPSAE (Failure to declare entry); Art. 199 of REPSAE (Failure to present travel document).
